502 Scientists Honored by AAAS for Advancements in Science and Society, including Arizona Professors

Arizona Professors Honored by the American Association for the Advancement of Science

The American Association for the Advancement of Science recently announced its list of the 2023 class of fellows, with 502 scientists, engineers, and innovators being acknowledged for their contributions to scientific and social fields. Among those recognized were University of Arizona professors Daniel Apai and Dante Lauretta for their work in astronomy, planetary sciences, and astrobiology, as well as ASU professor Kaye Reed for her research in human evolution.

Kaye Reed was among the scientists recognized by the AAAS for her work in reconstructing paleoenvironments for hominin ancestors. She expressed gratitude and felt overwhelmed by the recognition, believing it to be a validation of her hard work. She explained that her research focuses on understanding the relationship between organisms and their environments by studying how they lived in the past.

Andrew Black from the science association noted that the AAAS fellows program has a long history, with the first class of fellows being named in 1874. He emphasized that this honor is considered to be one of the oldest and most prestigious recognitions in the scientific community, representing a culmination of an individual’s career achievements and contributions.
