Boston College Sophomore Ryan Leonard Chooses to Stay with Eagles over Washington Capitals

Highly touted prospect Ryan Leonard is making his way back to Boston College

Boston College sophomore Ryan Leonard has decided to return to the Eagles instead of joining the Washington Capitals for the playoffs. General manager Brian MacLellan announced this decision on Wednesday, expressing support for Leonard’s choice to continue developing his skills at one of the nation’s top programs.

During his freshman season, Leonard showed great leadership and progress, scoring the most goals by a freshman in the program’s history and the third-most goals in the NCAA. MacLellan mentioned that the organization will continue to monitor Leonard’s development and progress in the upcoming season, looking forward to seeing him build upon his successful first year.

Speculation on social media suggested that Leonard might change his mind and sign with the Capitals, but he has decided to stay at Boston College. The 19-year-old winger was the eighth pick in last year’s draft and had an impressive season at BC, recording 60 points in 41 games and helping the Eagles reach the Frozen Four before losing in the final to Denver.

Leonard could have potentially played in NHL playoffs alongside other young players, but he chose to focus on another season at BC. He will have a chance to play alongside linemates Will Smith and Gabe Perreault as they pursue a national championship. Cutter Gauthier, who recently signed with Anaheim after a successful run at world juniors and as a finalist for Hobey Baker Award, is expected to debut for Ducks in their upcoming season finale against Vegas.
