Building Bridges: Whitewater High Mentors Foster Science Passion in Sara Harp Minter Students

Collaboration ignites passion for science

For the past three years, students in the Whitewater High Science National Honor Society have been volunteering to mentor the Sara Harp Minter Elementary Science Olympiad team. Every Friday morning, these mentors visit the Mountain Lions to inspire and deepen their understanding of science content for their competitions. The mentors bring hands-on activities and games to help students strengthen their knowledge for the county competition.

Whitewater STEAM bus is a program that has been developed by Whitewater High School, where mentors from Whitewater High share their love for science with the community. This passion for science has motivated past students to continue participating in Science Olympiad even as they move on to middle school. The collaboration between Minter enrichment teacher Stacy McClanahan, 1st grade teacher Kristi Soong, and Whitewater High science teachers Kathryn Dupree and Shelley Kozlowski has helped foster this love for science among students.

McClanahan expressed gratitude for the Whitewater students who are willing to develop relationships with and mentor the Mountain Lions. She said that their support and mentorship have been instrumental in helping the Minter students succeed in their science endeavors. Additionally, this collaboration aims to inspire a love for all things science and build relationships within the Whitewater community.
