Chicago Bears Legend Frank Avellini: A Tribute to a Fierce Competitor and Pioneer in Football History

Bob Avellini, former Bears quarterback, passes away at 70

Avellini passed away at the age of 70 on Saturday. He was drafted by the Bears in the sixth round of the 1975 draft, the same year Walter Payton was selected as their first-round pick. During his rookie season, he started four games and went on to start 40 more regular season games over the next three seasons. Avellini made his only playoff appearance in a loss to the Cowboys after the 1977 season.

The Bears described Avellini as a fierce and tough competitor, best known for leading them on an unlikely run to their first postseason appearance in 14 years in 1977. He remained with the Bears until he was released during the 1984 season, finishing out the year with the Jets and spending time with the Cowboys during preseason before ultimately retiring. The team expressed their condolences for his passing, recognizing his contributions to their history and impact on their success.
