Choking incident involving foreign object in baby’s airway highlights the dangers of playing with small objects or eating while crying

An 8-month-old boy had a mango stem stuck in his airway

An 8-month-old boy was playing with a mango when he suddenly started coughing and crying. His mother tried to calm him down by patting his back, but noticed that he was having trouble breathing and turning purple. She immediately took him to the hospital.

Doctors at the first hospital attempted to remove the foreign object from the boy’s bronchus using two endoscopy attempts, but it could not be removed. The boy was then transferred to the City Children’s Hospital for further treatment.

At Children’s Hospital 2, doctors successfully removed the foreign object using a specialized bronchoscopy system with a flexible scope. The object turned out to be the stem of the mango. The baby is currently in stable condition and undergoing further monitoring and treatment.

Dr. Le Thi Thanh Thao from Children’s Hospital 2 emphasized the dangers of foreign objects in a child’s airway, especially in children under 3 who are prone to exploring and putting objects in their mouths. Parents are advised to educate their children on avoiding playing with small objects or eating while crying, as well as administering immediate first aid if their child shows signs of choking before visiting a medical facility for examination and treatment. Prevention is key in avoiding such accidents, which can be life-threatening to children.
