Evangelical Church of Berlin-Brandenburg-Silesian Upper Lusatia Calls for Honest Examination, Accountability and Change Amid Pandemic and Abuse Crises.

Bishop Stäblein urges action on the COVID-19 pandemic

At a state synod meeting in Görlitz, Evangelical Church of Berlin-Brandenburg-Silesian Upper Lusatia Bishop Christian Stäblein emphasized the importance of an honest examination of the corona pandemic. He highlighted the need for open and honest conversations to learn from the experiences of the past year.

The church faced strict corona measures during the pandemic, with services being canceled or held under strict rules. Despite the challenges, Stäblein acknowledged that the overall response was not in vain. The pandemic was seen as a joint effort to protect lives, and he expressed gratitude for those in politics and science who worked tirelessly to combat it.

Another important topic at the church parliament meeting was sexual abuse within the Evangelical Church. The church leadership provided funds for professionalization of processing, prevention, and intervention work to support victims and address this issue. The church recognized its responsibility in addressing abuse and pledged to support those affected.

Stäblein emphasized the need for accountability and a commitment to changing structures that facilitated abuse. He called for recognition of the horror of sexual violence and complicity in enabling it by churches. The church is taking steps to address past misconduct and support victims in seeking justice and healing.

In addition, there was a proposal from council elders regarding distancing from Alternative for Germany (AfD). The church is committed to upholding democracy and rule of law principles, regardless of political affiliation. It will resist any actions that undermine these principles or promote populism or incitement.

Overall, Stäblein emphasized transparency, accountability, and change within the Evangelical Church as they navigate through these challenging times while staying true to their values and principles.
