Fear of Islamic Terrorism: Europe Prepares for Summer Events Amid Elevated Threat Levels

Preparations for summer events in Europe amidst concerns of kidnappings and terrorist threats are underway

The recent terrorist attack in Moscow, which resulted in the loss of over 140 lives by ISIS-linked terrorists, has once again brought the threat of Islamic terrorist attacks to the forefront of Europe’s agenda. Following increased vigilance post the Gaza war, international intelligence cooperation, and waves of arrests, the fear of terrorist attacks has heightened ahead of the series of major events planned in Europe this summer.

Germany’s Minister of the Interior has announced the reestablishment of border checks ahead of the European Football Championship games (Euro 2024) to be held from June 14 to July 14. The high level of threat posed by Islamist terrorism has prompted this decision, with over 27,000 people in Germany identified as having “Islamist potential” and under surveillance. Various security measures such as deploying police officers at border points and using drones for surveillance are being put in place to ensure the safety of spectators and participants at the upcoming games.

France is also taking precautions against potential terrorist threats during its Olympics this summer. Armed patrols and exercises are already in place to deal with any possible threats that may arise.
