This World Malaria Day 2024, we are reminded of the serious mosquito-borne illness that affects millions of people worldwide. The theme for this year is “Accelerating the fight against malaria for a more equitable world,” which highlights the need to address inequalities in access to malaria prevention, detection, and treatment services.
Malaria can be fatal if not diagnosed and treated promptly. Symptoms typically appear 10-15 days after a mosquito bite and can include fever, chills, and headaches. To prevent malaria, it’s important to avoid high-risk areas, wear protective clothing, use insect repellents, and sleep under nets.
High-risk groups for malaria include older adults, young children, pregnant women, and travellers from non-malarial areas. It’s crucial to seek immediate diagnosis through a parasitological test if anyone shows symptoms of malaria. By spreading awareness and practicing prevention measures, individuals can make a difference in the fight against malaria this World Malaria Day.
