Finland’s Hydrogen Future: Gasgrid Releases Preliminary Plan for National Transmission Network and Launches Market Survey

In the coming years, Finland’s national hydrogen transmission network will enable the establishment of a hydrogen market within the country. Gas grid, a gas transmission network company, has released a preliminary plan for Finland’s hydrogen backbone network with the aim of creating an open hydrogen market by the early 2030s. These plans are based on a market survey conducted by Gasgrid in 2023.

The planned hydrogen transmission network will initially focus on the coastal area of Finland as a significant number of wind power projects are located there and a large portion of the country’s carbon dioxide emissions are generated in southern Finland. This first phase of development will lay the foundation for future expansion into eastern, central, and northern Finland where new renewable energy production sites could be established.

Gasgrid will begin mapping out concrete route alternatives for the hydrogen transmission network in the coming months, gathering feedback from companies and project developers involved in the hydrogen economy. This collaborative approach will help support the further development and expansion of the network in various regions of Finland. The successful implementation of this plan will pave the way for a cleaner and more sustainable energy future for Finland.
