From 100m to 400m: Michael Norman’s Journey to Winning Olympic Gold

Former sprinter Michael Norman reunites with former coach to return to the 400m event

Michael Norman, the reigning World 400m champion, has decided to return to his former event after a brief stint in the 100m. He made this decision after facing challenges and setbacks during the 2023 season, including tendonitis. Additionally, Norman announced a coaching change in May from John Smith to Quincy Watts, who coached him during his college years at USC. Despite these changes, Norman was eliminated in the first round of the 100m at the USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships in July 2023.

However, Norman’s focus on winning a gold medal in the 400m at the 2022 World Championships has not been forgotten. In his first race since last July, he ran a time of 44.21 seconds in the 400m event, which currently ranks him second in the world for the year. This time was one hundredth faster than the winning time at the 2022 World Championships.

In order to secure a spot on the Paris Olympic team for the individual 400m event, Norman will need to finish in the top three at the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials scheduled from June 21-30 in Eugene, Oregon.
