From Australian Rules to American Dream: The Jaguars’ Newest Addition Brings Unique Background to NFL

Australian TE Patrick Murtagh signs with Jaguars

The Jaguars have recently added Australian tight end Patrick Murtagh to their team through the NFL’s International Player Pathway Program. This program allows Murtagh to join the roster without counting against the 90-man limit, and if he doesn’t make the final 53-man roster at the end of the summer, he can be carried as a 17th practice squad player.

Before joining the Jaguars, Murtagh previously spent time with the Lions last offseason but had to leave due to a medical issue. To prepare for his chance with the Jaguars, he participated in a scouting combine in London and trained at IMG Academy in Florida. Prior to transitioning to the NFL, Murtagh played Australian Rules Football in his home country.

Murtagh’s unique background in Australian Rules Football will be fascinating to watch as he tries to translate it to American football. The Jaguars will have the flexibility to continue working with him, even if he doesn’t initially make the team. This opportunity through the International Player Pathway Program allows Murtagh to pursue his dream of playing in the NFL while bringing a new perspective to the team.
