From Sports to Sarcasm: A Closer Look at Michael Che’s Jokes about Women’s Basketball

Caitlin Clark Makes Surprise Appearance on ‘SNL’ to Call Out Michael Che for Disparaging Women’s Sports

On Saturday Night Live’s “Weekend Update,” Michael Che made a joke about University of Iowa basketball star Caitlin Clark having her jersey replaced with an apron, eliciting groans and laughs from the audience. To the surprise of many, Clark herself joined Che and Colin Jost at their desk shortly after the joke. She took issue with Che’s frequent jokes about women’s sports, particularly women’s basketball.

Che and Jost acknowledged that he often makes jokes about women’s sports, but they also recognized that they have very different talents. While Che is unable to play basketball like Clark, Clark is unable to tell jokes like him. Despite their banter, both Che and Clark agreed that their talents were vastly different.

Clark then offered to read some jokes she had written about women’s sports to Che, who reluctantly obliged. He delivered her jokes, including one about the WNBA team Indiana Fever and another referencing his own comedy special. After hearing her humor, Clark gifted Che with an apron personally autographing it for him.

As she left, Clark joked with Che about giving the apron to his girlfriend, but he replied back saying “You don’t have a girlfriend.” The comical exchange highlighted the ongoing dynamic between Che’s jokes about women’s sports and the athletes themselves.
