From Virtual Shadowing to Medicine: Nicole Hernandez’s Journey with the Medi-Gators Program

Medi-Gators Program Offers Students Shadowing Opportunities in Health Careers

Nicole Hernandez, a biochemistry undergraduate student at UF, was impressed by the teamwork and communication skills displayed by health care professionals during her virtual shadowing experiences through the Medi-Gators program. These experiences helped solidify her decision to pursue a career in medicine. Hernandez, who is set to graduate in May 2024 and plans to take a gap year before applying to medical school, gained valuable exposure and experiences through her involvement in the events committee and as a student ambassador.

The Medi-Gators program provided Hernandez with an opportunity to gain insight into the various roles within health care and see how teams collaborate effectively to provide quality care to patients. These experiences were crucial in helping her understand the skills needed to succeed in the medical field, including communication and teamwork abilities.

Hernandez credits the program with helping her develop these necessary skills and is confident in her decision to stay on the pre-med track and pursue a career in medicine. With the support of mentors and exposure to different aspects of health care, she feels prepared for whatever lies ahead on her journey towards becoming a doctor.
