Georgia Southern Tai Chi Group Showcases Health Benefits and Encourages Fall Prevention among Seniors

Celebrating movement and wellness on World Tai Chi Day

The Georgia Southern Tai Chi Group gathered in front of the courthouse steps on Saturday morning to celebrate World Tai Chi Day and showcase the health benefits of this ancient practice. Led by Dr. Li Li, a kinesiology professor at Georgia Southern, the group meets every Tuesday and Thursday to practice Tai Chi together.

Tai Chi originally began as a martial arts practice focused on combat but has since evolved to emphasize wellness, balance, and strength. Dr. Li led the group through different movements in the 24 forms of Tai Chi and highlighted the numerous benefits for participants, especially in fall prevention for older individuals. Despite their age range of 65-85, none of them have experienced serious illnesses, injuries or contracted COVID during the pandemic.

Participant Emily Franklin shared that she joined the group to learn something new and has seen improvements in her balance and posture. The group is diverse in terms of backgrounds and all members enjoy coming together to practice Tai Chi. Suitable for all fitness levels, Tai Chi offers benefits for people of all ages, with a particular focus on older individuals.
