Recently, a giant anaconda, believed to be one of the largest in the world, was found dead in the Formoso River in southern Brazil’s Mato Grosso do Sul State. The discovery was made during filming for the National Geographics Disney+ series ‘Pole to Pole’ with Will Smith. The snake researcher who assisted in the initial discovery believes that Ana Julia may have suffered a gunshot wound, but investigations into the cause of death are ongoing.
Despite earlier speculation that the snake had been shot, Professor Freek Vonk, who was involved in the discovery, clarified that authorities have not found any evidence to support this claim. He mentioned that the cause of death is still being investigated and that it is possible that Ana Julia died a natural death. The loss of such a magnificent creature has significant implications for biodiversity and specifically for this particular species of colossal giant snakes.
When Ana Julia was discovered, Professor Bryan Fry from The University of Queensland marveled at their incredible size. He mentioned anecdotal reports from the Waorani people of other anacondas in the area measuring over 7.5 meters in length and weighing around 500 kilograms. While her individual presence may be gone forever, her legacy as one of nature’s most impressive creatures will live on through continued research and conservation efforts for these majestic beings.
