Global Campus Unrest: Universities Divided Over Israel-Palestine Conflict

Student Uprising in Multiple Countries

In Australia, pro-Palestine protests have occurred at seven universities, with tensions rising between students in solidarity with Palestinians and those supporting Israel at the University of Queensland. The group Students for Palestine UQ is calling on university leaders to disclose relationships with Israeli companies and cut ties with the Israeli arms industry. Similar protests have spread to other Australian campuses, including the University of Sydney.

The protest against the war in Gaza has sparked demonstrations and occupations on over 60 American campuses, leading to the arrest of over 2 thousand people since mid-April. Images of police in riot gear clearing out Columbia and UCLA have spread worldwide, as protests spread to universities in Europe, Asia, Oceania, and the Middle East.

In the United Kingdom, demonstrations in solidarity with Palestinians have taken place since the start of the Gaza war, with occupations and encampments occurring at some British universities. In France, protests at universities like Sciences Po and the Sorbonne have led to police interventions to clear out camps. Protests have also erupted in India, with solidarity expressed by the Students’ Federation of India.

In Canada, pro-Palestine students at McGill University in Montreal set up an encampment on campus, demanding the university sever ties with Israeli companies. Similar protests are ongoing at universities in Toronto and Vancouver. In Lebanon, students at the American University of Beirut are demanding a boycott of companies doing business with Israel.
