Huntsville Leaders Official Open New Multi-Sport Complex Honoring Former Mayor Loretta Spencer

Huntsville’s Loretta P. Spencer Sports Complex at John Hunt Park celebrates grand reopening after expansion

The Loretta P. Spencer Sports Complex at John Hunt Park was officially opened by Huntsville leaders, both past and present. The newly expanded facility features four championship multi-use fields, NCAA-approved lighting, digital scoreboards, press boxes, locker rooms, sound systems, plaza areas with shade sails and picnic facilities, expanded parking, and stadium seating for up to 5,000 sports fans.

The 20-acre facility consists of four field championship-caliber fields suitable for various multipurpose field sports such as soccer, lacrosse, and ultimate frisbee. Two fields have synthetic turf while the other two have natural grass, complementing the eight synthetic turf fields at the nearby Merrimack Sports Complex.

Mayor Tommy Battle expressed gratitude for former Huntsville Mayor Loretta Spencer’s vision and leadership in making the complex a reality. The facility was named in her honor to recognize her dedication to youth sports in Huntsville.

The $17 million expansion not only makes Huntsville an attractive location for state, regional, and national tournaments but also caters to local sports teams. The goal of John Hunt Park is to provide world-class sports facilities for championship-level tournaments and local residents alike.

The Honorable Loretta Spencer officially opened the new multiuse championship fields at John Hunt Park by cutting the ribbon. She was accompanied by Sports Commission Executive Director Mark Russell, Mayor Tommy Battle, Parks & Recreation Director James Gossett, Council Members Jennie Robinson and Bill Kling
