Is it Worth It? The Controversy Over Hosting the FIFA World Cup in New Jersey.

World Cup soccer might have negative effects on New Jersey

When the news of the World Cup being held in New Jersey first broke, many people, including myself, were ecstatic about the potential for our state to host such a prestigious event. However, after reading more about the backroom deals and handouts that FIFA would receive at the expense of New Jersey taxpayers, I am no longer in support of it.

It is simply unjust for an organization that will make billions from the event to be given money at the expense of our state’s residents. Our taxes are already high enough, and we should not be burdened with any further costs for an event that will bring in significant profits for FIFA.

Furthermore, providing free public transportation to the event seems unnecessary when we have successfully managed without it during other major sporting events and concerts at MetLife Stadium. Our state has a proven track record of accommodating large crowds without special treatment or extravagant spending on infrastructure. It is time for Governor Phil Murphy to reconsider these agreements and ensure that New Jersey taxpayers are not further burdened by this unnecessary expenditure.
