Israeli Army Takes Control of Rafah Crossing in Gaza Amid Humanitarian Impact Fears

Israeli Army captures Palestinian side of Rafah crossing in southern Gaza on Egypt border

On Tuesday, the Israeli Army confirmed that they have seized control of the Rafah crossing, which connects the Gaza Strip with Egypt. This crossing serves as one of the main entry points for humanitarian aid to the enclave. Prior to the military operation, the IDF coordinated with international organizations operating in the area to ensure their safety.

The IDF took operational control of the Rafah crossing on the Gazan side following intelligence indicating that terrorists were using it for their objectives. They also mentioned that Hamas launched an attack with projectiles from the area resulting in the death of four Israeli soldiers. The IDF has targeted and destroyed terrorist infrastructure, including military buildings and tunnels, leading to the death of approximately 20 terrorists.

The Gaza Crossings and Borders Authority has confirmed the suspension of passenger traffic and entry of humanitarian aid after the Israeli operation, leading to concerns about the humanitarian impact of the attack on the city. Palestinian newspaper ‘Filastin’ reported that Israeli authorities have blocked crossings, sentencing Palestinian residents to death by hindering access to humanitarian aid. The Kerem Shalom crossing was closed after a Hamas attack, further exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.

The IDF has shared videos and photographs showing their forces in action in the area. According to a statement from Israel’s Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman, “We will not tolerate any attempt by Hamas or any other terrorist organization to threaten our security or undermine our sovereignty.” He added that Israel is committed to maintaining peace and stability in Gaza while ensuring its own security.
