Italy’s commitment to bolstering NATO’s military presence in Eastern Flank

Italy bolsters NATO’s eastern flank with 3,000 troops.

Italy is dedicated to increasing NATO’s military presence in its eastern flank. General Francesco Paolo Figliuolo, Commander of the Joint Forces Summit Operational Command, announced Italy’s commitment to this effort, emphasizing the importance of strengthening the alliance’s security in this area.

In the land domain, Italy has increased its presence in the Baltic region with a multinational unit supported by approximately 290 soldiers. The country also plans to elevate its role in Bulgaria and Hungary to Brigade level, further solidifying their commitment to NATO’s eastern flank. In the maritime domain, Italy continues to participate in naval surveillance activities while their air assets support airspace surveillance and control activities in Poland, Lithuania, and Romania.

Italy’s overall contribution to NATO activities in the eastern flank includes a maximum authorized contingent of more than 3,000 units, 1,100 land vehicles, 1 naval unit and over 20 air assets. Additionally, Italy participates in 41 international missions and operations with plans for new missions in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Strait of Bab El Mandeb.
