Job Gains and Unemployment Rates: A Breakdown by Industry and Worker Group in March

303,000 Jobs Added in March as Unemployment Rate Drops to 3.8% in the Economy

In March, various industries experienced significant job gains. The health care sector led the way with an addition of 72,000 jobs, while the leisure and hospitality industry added 49,000 jobs. Construction saw an increase of 39,000 jobs, retail trade added 18,000 jobs, the other services industry added 16,000 jobs and social assistance added 9,000 jobs. However, there was little to no change in employment in other major industries such as mining, manufacturing, wholesale trade, transportation, information technology and financial activities.

On the other hand, among the major worker groups in March, the unemployment rate for Black Americans increased to 6.4%, while the rates for Hispanics and Asian Americans decreased to 4.5% and 2.5% respectively. The jobless rates for teenagers showed a slight increase to 12.6%, while adult women’s rates remained unchanged at 3.6%. White Americans also saw little change in their jobless rates at 3.4%, while adult men’s rates decreased slightly to 3.3%. The number of long-term unemployed workers who were jobless for 27 weeks or longer accounted for only 19.5% of the total number of people unemployed in March.
