London Mayoral Election 2021: Sadiq Khan Wins Historic Third Term Amidst a Strong Labor Party Performance

Sadiq Khan makes history as first London mayor to win third term

Sadiq Khan, a representative of the opposition Labor Party, won the mayoral election for the third time in London. He secured 61.2% of the vote in Thursday’s election, with his closest rival, Susan Hall of the ruling Conservative Party, receiving 15.1%. The Labor Party strengthened its position in local elections held throughout England.

Khan was first elected mayor of London in 2016 and will serve another four-year term, making him the first mayor in London’s history to win three terms. His parents emigrated from Pakistan shortly before his birth and he was raised in a large family with a strong Islamic upbringing. Khan has always identified as a Muslim and values the importance of his faith. His father worked as a bus driver for 25 years while his mother was a seamstress and housewife.

Despite his humble beginnings, Khan has become a prominent figure in British politics and continues to serve as a key leader for the city of London. His victory in this year’s election marks another significant milestone in his career as he becomes only the second person to ever win three terms as mayor of London after Ken Livingstone who won the first election held in 2000.
