Mastercard and UniCredit Partner to Improve Accessibility for Blind and Visually Impaired Customers through Innovative Payment Cards

Unicredit launches a credit card specifically designed for the blind

Mastercard has partnered with UniCredit to update its cards, including debit, credit, and prepaid cards, with Mastercard Touch Card features specifically designed for blind and visually impaired individuals. These cards are now available in Italy and will be gradually introduced in the 12 countries where UniCredit operates by 2024, totaling approximately 20 million cards.

The Mastercard Touch Card design incorporates lateral engravings that enable users to identify the correct card by touch, making it easier for blind and partially sighted customers to differentiate between different payment cards. This design enhances safety, inclusiveness, and independence for individuals with visual impairments when making payments online or in stores. With over 30 million blind and partially sighted individuals in Europe and 1 in 30 Europeans experiencing vision issues, this innovation aims to provide a more accessible payment solution.

UniCredit’s ESG principles are reflected in the sustainability of these cards as they are made from recycled PVC and come with a Mastercard sustainability badge to certify their sustainability credentials. Alberto Palombi, Head of Group Payment Solutions at UniCredit, emphasized the importance of offering a simple, inclusive, and sustainable financial experience to customers across Europe through this partnership with Mastercard.

Mastercard Europe President Mark Barnett highlighted the company’s commitment to inclusivity and driving new payment card standards with solutions like the Mastercard Touch Card. By working with partners like UniCredit, Mastercard aims to improve accessibility for all customers through customer-centric solutions that address diverse needs while promoting sustainability and supporting financial well-being.
