The city of Cumming is set to host its first annual Mental Health Summit later this month. The event aligns with the national recognition of May as mental health awareness month. During the upcoming city council meeting on Tuesday, Mayor Troy Brumbalow will officially declare May as mental health awareness month.
In a statement released on Friday, Brumbalow emphasized the importance of breaking down barriers, fostering understanding, and creating a supportive environment for mental health conversations. The goal is to positively impact the well-being of the community.
The Mental Health Summit will take place on Monday, May 13 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Forsyth Conference Center on Ronald Reagan Parkway. The summit will be led by the Forsyth County Mental Health & Wellness Advocates group.
Mary Shaffer, a member of the group, shared some details about the event, including a lineup of speakers. Speakers will include Maureen Bixler from Live Life Counseling, former Georgia State Representative Mike Dudgeon, Commissioner Cindy Mills, and a resident sharing a personal testimony about the mental health challenges faced by youth in schools and the wellness needs of the community.
This year’s summit will focus on the theme “Faces of Mental Health,” aiming to shed light on various aspects of mental health and well-being.
