Elon Musk’s Brain Chip Promises to Restore Vision to Blind People: How Blindsight Works

Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, SpaceX and Neuralink, recently announced the testing of a new chip called Blindsight. This chip has the potential to restore vision for blind individuals or enhance vision for those with impaired vision. The chip is a brain implant that has been tested on monkeys and is still in the experimental phases, with visual resolution currently comparable to video game graphics.

Neuralink’s experimental implant is powered by a wireless battery that allows for recording and transmitting brain signals wirelessly to an application that decodes a person’s movement intentions. The company is focused on integrating artificial intelligence (AI) technology into the human brain and has already achieved significant progress with brain implants in animals. Elon Musk envisions that these brain implants could potentially help individuals with paralysis regain mobility by sending signals to motor or sensory neurons.

In January of this year, Neuralink introduced Telepathy, a device designed to assist individuals with mobility loss in controlling a smartphone or computer with their mind. One such individual, Nolan Arbaugh, who was paralyzed from the neck down following a diving accident, received a Neuralink brain implant and has demonstrated remarkable progress in controlling a computer cursor and playing chess using only his mind. Despite acknowledging that the implant is not perfect and that challenges remain, Arbaugh expressed profound gratitude for the life-changing impact of the technology.
