New Chapter for Haiti: Presidential Council Sworn In to Restore Constitutional Order

Transition process in Haiti starts with the President Council issuing a constitution by decree

This Friday saw the establishment of the Presidential Council of Haiti, which has been tasked with restoring constitutional order after the resignation of Prime Minister Ariel Henry. The council, made up of nine members, was officially established by decree and will now elect a new prime minister. The Caribbean Community (Caricom) expressed its support for the council, highlighting its commitment to putting Haiti back on the path of stability, dignity and democratic legitimacy.

The UN Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH) reaffirmed its commitment to support Haiti’s institutions in their efforts to restore democratic institutions. The UN office closely follows the Haitian political process and highlighted the importance of international support for the country’s Police in restoring security and the rule of law.

Last week, the Presidential Council announced a political agreement among its members after a period of formation marked by challenges and exits. This development came after the country declared a state of emergency due to widespread violence, particularly in Port-au-Prince. Gangs have been dominating the area following the assassination of President Jovenel Moise in 2021. The acting prime minister, Ariel Henry, resigned after pressure from various sectors, leading to the establishment of the Presidential Council.
