NHTSA’s New Car Assessment Program: Empowering Consumers with Advanced Driver Assistance Technologies

Driver Assistance Technology: An Analysis by the U.S. GAO

As the production of new vehicles continues, they are increasingly coming equipped with advanced driver assistance technologies that hold the potential to decrease the number of accidents and fatalities on the road. To help guide consumers in their purchasing decisions, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) oversees the New Car Assessment Program (NCAP).

The Government Accountability Office (GAO) has recently made five recommendations to improve the effectiveness of NCAP. One of these recommendations is for NHTSA to finalize its NCAP roadmap, which would provide a clear direction for future initiatives. Additionally, GAO suggests that NHTSA should communicate its progress on meeting deadlines for updating NCAP and provide information on the limitations of partially automated driving systems on its website.

By implementing these recommendations, NHTSA can better educate consumers about the safety features of new vehicles, ultimately leading to a safer driving experience for all. Through its efforts, NHTSA aims to empower consumers with information about vehicle safety features and driver assistance technologies so that they can make informed decisions when it comes to purchasing a new vehicle.
