North Memorial Nurses Association: Protests Healthcare Cuts, Calls for Additional Funding

Minnesota Nurses Union Plans Rally on Monday to Protest Proposed Cuts at North Memorial Health

The Minnesota Nurses Association is set to hold a press conference on Monday at 2 p.m. to speak out against proposed cuts to services at North Memorial hospitals and clinics. Executives at North Memorial have announced that they will eliminate outpatient mental health programs and two neonatal intensive care units at North Memorial Health in Robbinsdale, resulting in over 100 employees losing their jobs. These cuts are expected to take effect by the end of August.

The association has accused North Memorial of prioritizing investments in facilities in wealthier communities, despite citing rising healthcare costs as the reason for the cuts. North Memorial is seeking approval from the Minnesota Legislature to participate in a direct Medicaid reimbursement program to help cover their expenses. However, earlier this year, the Hennepin County Commission eliminated their $22 million subsidy due to rising expenses at North Memorial and Hennepin Healthcare.

MNA leaders believe that these cuts will force 3,400 patients to find new healthcare providers. They are calling on North Memorial to reconsider its decision and find alternative solutions that do not harm patients or staff. The association is also urging the Minnesota Legislature to provide adequate funding for healthcare providers like North Memorial so that they can continue providing essential services without having to cut corners or lay off employees.
