Nvidia and Amazon have recently made a significant financial commitment to support a partnership between the University of Tsukuba in Japan and the University of Washington in the United States. This collaboration, valued at $110 million, is focused on various aspects of artificial intelligence, aiming to open new research avenues in crucial sectors such as robotics, healthcare, climate change, and atmospheric sciences.

The partnership will bring together academic researchers from both universities with industry experts from Nvidia and Amazon to address global challenges through cutting-edge AI research and technology development. The technology companies will contribute $25 million each to fund the universities’ AI research, with a specific focus on developing innovative solutions to global challenges.

Nvidia stated that this support comes at a critical time as universities worldwide are gearing up to address the demand for AI skills by utilizing high-performance computing capabilities. The company emphasized their recent collaboration with the Japan National Institute for Advanced Industrial Science and Technology on AI and quantum technology, emphasizing the importance of partnerships between companies and universities in addressing the shortage of skilled AI professionals.

In a statement from the University of Tsukuba, President Nagata Kyosuke emphasized that the new partnership will strengthen existing research in the semiconductor industry in Japan and foster collaboration and knowledge exchange with US institutions. Amazon highlighted that this partnership will last for ten years and builds upon a 13-year relationship with Nvidia, underscoring their long-term commitment to fostering innovation and technological development.

University of Washington President Tricia Serio underscored the institution’s unique opportunity to lead the global conversation on AI by bringing together academic researchers, industry experts, and government leaders. This collaboration is seen as a key driver for advancing AI research and development.
