Pope Francis Delivers Urgent Call for Peace in Europe and Middle East Amid Health Concerns During Easter Address

Concerns over Pope Francis’s health as he presides over Easter Mass

Pope Francis delivered his traditional Easter message at St. Peter’s Square on Sunday, addressing conflicts in Europe and the Middle East and condemning war as “absurdity.” Amid concerns about his health due to his age, he renewed his plea for an immediate ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas conflict, asked for access to humanitarian aid in Gaza, prompt release of hostages, and a general exchange of prisoners in Ukraine.

The octogenarian pope had cancelled Good Friday services at the last minute to preserve his health for the remainder of the weekend’s celebrations. He had been leading Holy Week liturgies and presided over Easter Vigil in St. Peter’s Basilica on Saturday. The health of the pope has been closely monitored since last year when he underwent abdominal surgery and was hospitalized with bronchitis.

During his Sunday address, Francis emphasized helping children affected by war, tackling food insecurity, climate change effects, and human trafficking. This is an ongoing story and will be updated as needed.
