Red Light Indicators Crackdown: Henderson Police Department Combats Violations with New Technology

Henderson Police Optimistic About New Technology to Enhance Officer Safety

In recent times, the Henderson Police Department has implemented new technology to combat drivers who run red lights in the city. This initiative was prompted by Sgt. Roger Matuszak, who revealed that red light indicators have been installed at 12 strategic intersections in Henderson. The selection of these intersections was based on various factors such as traffic volume, public complaints and accident data, with the aim of reducing red-light violations.

The new LED lights attached to the traffic poles allow officers to monitor red light violators from a safe distance. These indicators change color when the signal cycles to red, with blue indicating left turn lanes and red indicating straight through lanes. This feature allows officers to observe the signal without having to directly look at it, enabling them to blend in with traffic and ensure safe enforcement practices.

Over the past month, Henderson police have been testing the red-light indicators and are optimistic about their potential impact on officer safety, reducing crashes and influencing better driving decisions. The technology was made possible by a grant from the Clark County Office of Public Safety, and Henderson officials are considering expanding its use to more intersections if it proves successful.

Some of the intersections where the red light indicators have been installed include Boulder and Lake Mead, Sunset and Stephanie, St. Rose and Raiders Way, and Eastern and Horizon Ridge, among others. The Henderson police department is also monitoring crash data at these intersections to evaluate the effectiveness of the new technology. If successful, the red-light indicators may be implemented at additional intersections throughout the city in the future.
