Santa Barbara Wine Industry Faces Criticism over Proposed Business Improvement District

Winemakers in Santa Barbara Renew Efforts to Establish Business Improvement District

Santa Barbara County supervisors have taken a step towards creating a vintners’ business improvement district that could generate up to $1.65 million annually to promote the region as a premier wine destination. The district aims to increase marketing efforts and attract more wine tourists and direct buyers to the area.

However, the proposal has faced opposition from some smaller vineyards in the past, with concerns raised about the one percent levy on gross sales being burdensome for them. Critics also questioned whether the proposal would constitute a new tax under state law, requiring a statewide vote of the people.

To address these concerns, supervisors approved the release of sales tax information for all 350 operators to a private consultant. If 50% of vintners, plus one, vote in favor of the improvement district, it will pass. Proponents argue that this is necessary for Santa Barbara to remain competitive in the region’s wine industry and enhance marketing efforts to promote the area as a leading destination for wine enthusiasts.
