Saving Nantucket’s Economy: Why We Must Support Article 59 at Town Meeting

Nantucket Current | The Fate of Our Economy and Community Rests in the Balance

As the owner of a short-term rental and an architectural firm on Nantucket, I urge all residents to vote YES on Article 59 at the upcoming Town Meeting on May 7. The fate of our island’s economy and the very essence of our community are at stake, and we cannot afford to let it falter.

For many of us, short-term rentals are not just a financial necessity but a lifeline that allows us to maintain properties we otherwise couldn’t afford. As someone deeply connected to Nantucket’s community, I have seen firsthand the crucial role that short-term rentals play in preserving our community.

I am proud to be invested in the well-being of our island, and I find it hard to believe that we would even consider allowing a few individuals to undermine our economy. It is important to recognize the important relationship between tourism and our local businesses. Short-term rental visitors not only support our shops and restaurants but also contribute to the island’s workforce, connecting our community together.

However, the threat posed by those who want to restrict property owner rights is significant. We cannot let the interests of a privileged few jeopardize the livelihoods of many families and the very core of our community. Article 59 is not just about protecting short-term rentals but about safeguarding the foundation of our island’s economy and the financial stability of our residents.

Tourism has been a saving grace for our island’s economy since the end of whaling, sustaining us for nearly two centuries. It is crucial that we come together to support Article 59 to ensure continued prosperity for future generations.

As someone who has built my life on this beautiful island, I urge each and every one of you to stand with me and vote YES on Article 59 at the Town Meeting on May 7. Our collective future is on the line, and we cannot afford to ignore high stakes
