Preventing Heatstroke: Tips from Shasta County Health Official for Hotter Weather

As the weather heats up in Shasta County, it’s essential to take precautions against heat-related illnesses. Heatstroke Prevention Day serves as a reminder of the dangers that come with high temperatures. Community Education Specialist Christopher Diamond from Shasta County Health and Human Services Agency provided tips on how to stay safe during the hot months.

Diamond emphasized the importance of staying hydrated, staying indoors, wearing loose-fitting, light clothing, and seeking shade when outside to reduce the risk of heat-related illness. It is also crucial to never leave children or pets inside a closed car, as temperatures inside can quickly rise to dangerous levels even on moderately warm days.

In addition, scheduling activities during the cooler parts of the day and bringing outdoor pets indoors can further lower the risk of heatstroke. Diamond highlighted that recognizing the symptoms of heatstroke is equally important, such as high body temperature, dizziness, confusion, and nausea. Taking immediate action by calling 911 if someone shows signs of heat-related illness is vital.

Diamond emphasized checking on those who may be more vulnerable to heat-related illnesses, including the elderly, individuals with disabilities, chronic health conditions, those on a fixed or low income
