Swedish Ice Hockey Stars Set to Compete at 2024 IIHF World Championship

Erik Karlsson and Marcus Pettersson Selected to Represent Team Sweden at IIHF World Championship

The Swedish Ice Hockey Association has announced that defensemen Erik Karlsson and Marcus Pettersson will represent Team Sweden at the 2024 IIHF World Championship. The championship will take place from May 10-26 in Prague and Ostrava, Czechia.

Karlsson, who is currently playing for the Penguins after being traded from the San Jose Sharks in August 2023, has a history of representing Sweden at the World Championship. He won a bronze medal in 2010 and has been an integral part of the team’s success. Karlsson excelled in his new team this season, leading all Penguins’ defensemen in goals, assists, and points. He also reached a significant milestone by becoming the 14th active defenseman to play 1,000 NHL games on April 13.

Pettersson, on the other hand, had a standout season with career-highs in multiple offensive categories. The defenseman from Skelleftea, Sweden played all 82 games and scored four goals, made 26 assists, and totaled 30 points. Additionally, he scored his first career game-winning goal against Montreal on January 27 and ended the season leading Pittsburgh with a plus-28 rating among defensemen.

As for Team Sweden’s preliminary round schedule, it has been announced but broadcast information is yet to be revealed at a later date.
