The Ethiopian Orthodox Church Celebrates 55-Day Fast and Belief in Resurrection of Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday

Ethiopian Orthodox Christians across the globe observe Easter

With the largest Orthodox population outside of Europe, Ethiopian followers fast for 55 days leading up to Easter, abstaining from meat and animal products. This tradition is deeply ingrained in their culture and has been observed for centuries.

On the eve of Easter, worshippers don traditional white attire and partake in church services that last into the early hours of the morning. The head of the church, Megabi Hadis Leake Mariam, spoke about the significance of Easter to Christians, emphasizing the belief in the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The celebration is a reminder that believers will also rise from death, similar to Christ.

Eastern Orthodox churches, including those in Ethiopia, follow the Julian calendar and mark the holiday on a specified Sunday. During this period, families reunite with their loved ones, coming from far distances to be together. It’s a time for reflection and celebration of faith.

The Kidus Gebreil Church in Addis Ababa was filled with priests, deacons, and worshippers who joined together to commemorate the holiday on Sunday. As they sang hymns and prayed together, they were reminded of their connection to God and their fellow believers around the world.
