Time is Running Out for Nevada County Businesses to File their Business Property Statements: Don’t Miss the Deadline!

Assessor Encourages Businesses to Submit Business Property Statement to Prevent Penalties

In Nevada County, businesses have less than five weeks left to file their Business Property Statement with the Assessor’s Office. The deadline for submission is May 7, 2024, and failure to comply will result in a 10% penalty. The filing period runs from January 1 through April 1, and businesses can either submit their statements electronically or by filling out a paper form.

Businesses that receive a notice to file letter from the Assessor are required by law to either eFile their statement or complete, sign, and return a paper statement to the Assessor’s Office. Additionally, any business that owns Personal Property and/or Fixtures with a total combined cost of $100,000 or more must file a Business Property Statement even if not requested by the Assessor.

Electronic filing offers several benefits such as saving time and resources as prior year acquisition cost information will automatically carry forward each year. Businesses who choose this option will receive confirmation that their Business Property Statement has been successfully filed. On the other hand, those who prefer to file on paper can download a paper Business Property Statement through the e-filing web portal if they have received a notice to file letter. However, it is essential to note that all information, including prior year costs, will need to be entered on the form each year.

To avoid any penalties or confusion, business owners can visit the Business Property webpage or contact the Assessor’s Office at business.property@nevadacountyca.gov or 530-265-1259 for assistance with re-sending notice to file letters or answering any questions they may have regarding the process of filing their Business Property Statements.
