Transforming Dubai’s Coastline: Urb’s Mangrove Forest Initiative Combat Climate Change and Promote Sustainable Development

The largest project to regenerate coastal regions on Earth

Dubai-based company Urb is leading a large-scale initiative to cover the city’s coastal area with giant mangrove forests through the Dubai Mangroves project. The goal of this ambitious development plan is to prevent erosion, flooding, and reduce CO2 emissions in the city. Urb is known for other large-scale initiatives such as an air-conditioned cycling track and the largest coral reef regeneration project.

The heart of the Dubai Mangroves project lies in the mangrove tree, which has exceptional abilities to absorb CO2, prevent erosion, and support marine life. The project aims to absorb 1.23 million tons of CO2 per year, equivalent to emissions from over 260,000 gasoline-powered vehicles. While planting such a large number of trees will take many years, Urb plans to use AI-powered drones and satellite photography to monitor and promote the growth of mangrove trees.

The Dubai Mangroves project will also include small beaches, social spaces, walkways, a visitor education center, botanical museum, and nature research center. Currently in the design phase, Urb has selected 6 pilot studies to demonstrate the feasibility of the project’s goals. The Dubai Mangroves project will play a crucial role in helping the city cope with the impacts of climate change by preventing erosion, rising sea levels and supporting marine life.
