Triple Threat: Capital Region Teams Gearing Up for NCAA and Division III Men’s Lacrosse Tournaments

Men’s lacrosse teams from UAlbany, RPI, and Union all advance to postseason play

In the postseason, three men’s college lacrosse teams from the Capital Region have secured their spots. Each team is determined to make a mark in their respective tournaments.

Firstly, The University at Albany men’s lacrosse team, fresh off an America East tournament championship, will host Sacred Heart in the first round of the NCAA Division I tournament. The Great Danes have been on a hot streak, winning four games in a row and seven of their last nine. Their recent victories over Merrimack and Vermont earned them the right to host the opening match at Tom & Mary Casey Stadium on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The winner of this match will advance to face Notre Dame, the tournament’s top seed.

In Division III, both RPI and Union have also earned spots in the national tournament. The RPI Engineers, with a record of 16-2, secured an opening-round bye after clinching the Liberty League tournament championship with a thrilling 15-14 victory over RIT. They will host either St. Mary’s (Md.) or Farmingdale State on Saturday at noon. RPI has been dominant this season, with only two losses so far.

On the other hand, The Union College men’s lacrosse team, with a record of 12-5, will face Stevenson (Md.) in a second-round tournament game on Saturday afternoon. A win in this match will give Union the opportunity to host another home game as Schenectady is hosting one of the Division III tournament pods. Both RPI and Union will be looking to continue their strong seasons and make a deep run in the national tournament.
