Ukrainian Olympic weightlifter Oleksandr Pielieshenko killed in Ukraine war

The Ukrainian weightlifter Oleksandr Pielieshenko, who had competed in the Rio Olympics, tragically lost his life on the front line as announced by the Ukrainian Weightlifting Federation on Monday. Pielieshenko was 30 years old and had achieved two European championship titles in 2016 and 2017. In the Rio Olympics, he finished in fourth place in the 85kg category. The Ukrainian Olympic Committee mourned the loss of Pielieshenko, who had joined the armed forces at the beginning of the Russian offensive in February 2022.
