Breaking Ground: North Charleston’s New $25 Million Sports Complex Opens to Rousing Applause

North Charleston Sports Complex to open its doors to the public on April 1

The North Charleston community is excited to welcome the new $25 million North Charleston Sports Complex, which was officially opened following a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday. This state-of-the-art facility includes five regulation-size gymnasiums for various indoor sports such as basketball, volleyball, and badminton. Additionally, the facility features five tennis courts that meet official U.S. Tennis Association standards, a roller rink for street hockey and roller-skating, and a 25-meter competitive pool that complements the North Charleston Aquatic Center in Dorchester County.

The new sports facility has replaced the long-standing Danny Jones Recreation Center, which underwent renovations to add more space and updates. North Charleston Mayor Reggie Burgess shared in an interview with WCSC that the Danny Jones Recreation Center played a significant role in his personal development, and he believes the new facility will have a similar impact on the youth in the community. Burgess expressed his belief that the new facility will help build minds and elevate young athletes, similar to his own experience at the former center.

Tj Rostin, the director of Parks and Recreation for North Charleston, highlighted the city’s commitment to recreation and providing opportunities for exercise and fun. Rostin emphasized that the facility is a place where the community can come together to watch kids play basketball and participate in various recreational activities. Currently, the outdoor facilities at the complex, including the roller-skating rink and tennis courts, are available for use. The pool will have a fee starting from April 1st.
