Iran and Iraq: Strengthening Scientific and Educational Cooperation through Diplomatic Efforts

Iran assigns science diplomat to Iraq

In May 2023, Naeem Al-Aboudi, the Iraqi Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, expressed his interest in increasing cooperation with Iran. He emphasized that many Iraqi youths are interested in continuing their higher education in Iran. Al-Aboudi made these statements during a meeting in Tehran with Mohammad-Ali Zolfigol, the Iranian Minister of Science, Research, and Technology.

Zolfigol recognized the importance of building stronger scientific connections between the two countries and encouraged joint seminars to increase collaboration. He suggested holding a meeting between heads of universities and research and technology centers from both countries to enhance cooperation. In July 2022, Vahid Haddadi-Asl, the Iranian deputy science minister, prioritized academic cooperation with Iraq among Islamic and neighboring countries.

Iran has been one of Iraq’s most significant partners for many years now. The country has provided numerous scholarships to Iraqis to pursue higher education in its universities. As a result, many Iraqi nationals are currently studying in Iranian institutions. This partnership has resulted in an increase in scientific exchanges between the two countries. However, there is still room for improvement when it comes to strengthening this relationship further.

Nader Nourmohammadi was recently appointed as Iran’s science attaché in Iraq by Zolfigol. His main responsibilities include identifying capacities and scientific facilities in Iraq, fostering scientific connections and cooperation with universities and research institutions in Iran, and attracting students and technologists.

Both sides are focused on strengthening scientific and educational cooperation between the two countries. The appointment of Nourmohammadi as science attaché is an important step towards building stronger ties between the two nations.

In conclusion, the partnership between Iran and Iraq has been successful so far, but there is still room for improvement when it comes to strengthening this relationship further. The appointment of Nourmohammadi as science attaché is a positive development that will help build stronger ties between the two countries.
