Pioneering Genomics for Health: Regional Meeting Explores the Implementation of Genomics in Clinical Medicine and Public Health

PAHO/WHO to convene regional meeting on human genomics for health

The World Health Organization (WHO) is hosting a regional meeting titled “Human Genomics for Health: Enhancing the Impact of Effective Research” in Brasilia, Brazil on May 15-16, 2024. This event aims to promote the implementation of genomics in clinical medicine and public health as well as strengthen genomics research in the Americas.

Genomics is an emerging field that focuses on studying an organism’s complete set of genes and how they interact with each other and the environment. This rapidly evolving discipline provides insights into various areas such as clinical care, food safety, infection control, and is essential to the “One Health” approach.

PAHO’s Science and Knowledge for Impact Unit (SK/EIH), with support from WHO, the PAHO Brazil Country office, and the Ministry of Health, Brazil are organizing this meeting. It will bring together representatives from PAHO Member States and regional experts and researchers working within the precision medicine ecosystem.

The WHO Science Council has a program aimed at promoting equitable access to genomics research and technologies globally. The objectives of this meeting include raising awareness about this program, sharing experiences and best practices in implementing genomic evidence to improve precision medicine and public health strategies, identifying challenges and strategies for genomics implementation, and creating opportunities for collaborations.

The regional meeting in Brasilia will have simultaneous interpretation in English, Spanish, and Portuguese to facilitate communication among participants. Join us on May 15-16, 2024 to learn more about the latest developments in genomics for health!
