USATF Chooses to Field U20 World Team After Thoughtful Deliberation

The United States Track and Field Association (USATF) has reversed its decision to withdraw from the 2024 World U20 Championships in Lima, Peru. After consulting with World Athletics and the Local Organizing Committee, USATF received assurance that safety measures would be in place for the event, and as a result, the organization will field a U.S. team for the championships which will be held from August 26-31, 2024.

USATF emphasized that the safety and well-being of its athletes, coaches, managers, and staff are top priorities. The organization will continue to closely communicate with all relevant stakeholders to ensure a successful and safe participation in the championships. The full team announcement will be made after the USATF Under-20 Championships on June 12-13, 2024 in Eugene, Oregon.

This decision marks a turnaround from USATF’s withdrawal from the 2021 World U20 Championships in Nairobi, Kenya. The organization cited safety concerns and the COVID-19 pandemic as reasons for pulling out of that competition. Looking ahead, the U.S. will host the 2026 World U
