Revolutionizing Safety Management at Sea: HMM Co.’s Adoption of Deep Eyes AI Image Analysis Solution

AI technology improves maritime safety using HMM

HMM Co., one of South Korea’s leading sea carriers, announced on Friday that they will be adopting an advanced AI image analysis solution called ‘Deep Eyes’. This cutting-edge technology, developed by GlobeAI, a startup founded by professors from Chung-Ang University, is set to enhance safety management throughout their fleet. Deep Eyes integrates AI image analysis capabilities into CCTV systems to detect emergencies such as fires, smoke, non-compliance with safety gear, and falls, with the ability to promptly alert management.

The absence of notification features in current CCTV systems has been a challenge for effective safety management in large ships. Despite their immense size, which can be compared to 3 to 4 soccer fields, these vessels typically only accommodate 23 to 25 crew members. Traditional methods of monitoring the interiors and exteriors of these vessels have been limited. With the introduction of Deep Eyes, HMM hopes to have a faster response to safety incidents and aims to prevent secondary accidents. The system will first be installed on a 24,000 TEU class container ship scheduled for next month. It will cover 15 critical areas including the engine room and deck.

After an evaluation period, HMM plans to explore the broader application of Deep Eyes technology across its entire fleet.
