Controversy over Constituent Assembly Proposal to Reform Colombia’s Institutions

Petro’s proposal for a constituent assembly met with opposition: “Concern for democracy”

In a recent speech in Cali, Colombia’s president Gustavo Petro discussed the possibility of convening a national constituent assembly to address the shortcomings of current institutions in implementing social reforms. However, this proposal has been met with criticism from the opposition, including former president Iván Duque and Senator María Fernanda Cabal.

Duque expressed concern about the potential threat to Colombian democracy, accusing Petro of trying to impose a failed model through a constituent assembly. Cabal called Petro a liar and radical leftist, denouncing his plans for reforms that she believes will bring misery and desolation.

The proposed healthcare reform by Petro’s administration is currently facing challenges in Congress, with members filing motions to shelve the bill. Other reforms related to the pension system and labor are also blocked in the Legislature. Despite these obstacles, Petro remains committed to achieving peace and justice in Colombia through these reforms.
