Essex County Doctor Sentenced for Health Care Fraud, Ordered to Pay $1.3 Million in Restitution

New Jersey doctor receives prison sentence for defrauding Amtrak health care provider

An Essex County doctor, Muhammad Mirza, pleaded guilty to one charge of conspiracy to commit health care fraud and was sentenced to 26 months in prison on Tuesday. Between April 2017 and June 2022, he and other conspirators conspired to bill Amtrak employee health care plan for services that were either never provided or medically unnecessary.

The scheme resulted in losses of over $1.3 million for Amtrak, according to prosecutors. Mirza operated medical offices in New Jersey, New York, and other states. Despite the allegations, his attorney did not respond to requests for comment at the time. In addition to his prison sentence, Mirza was ordered to pay $1.37 million in restitution and serve two years of supervised release.
