Giants Facing Catching Crisis as Veteran Backup Tom Murphy Sustains Injury

Murphy of the Giants angrily throws gear after getting hurt in heavy rain

On Saturday night, the Giants faced even more bad luck when veteran backup catcher Tom Murphy sustained an injury during their game against the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park. The game had already been delayed by 70 minutes due to rain, and when play resumed in a downpour at 7:15 p.m. ET, Murphy was injured.

It’s unclear what injury Murphy sustained, but he expressed his frustration in the dugout by slamming his catchers gear. Blake Sabol, who was called up to take Patrick Bailey’s roster spot earlier that day, entered the game in Murphy’s place.

With Joey Bart no longer in the organization, the Giants’ catching depth will be tested if Murphy is out for an extended period. If Bailey is also unable to play due to his concussion injury, the team may have to rely on their depth at the catching position even more heavily.

If Murphy is seriously injured, 28-year-old minor league catcher Jakson Reetz, currently playing for the Triple-A Sacramento River Cats, may be the next in line to be called up by the Giants. The team will have to navigate through these injuries while trying to keep their winning streak alive on the field.
