Divers and boat cleaners in Stuart, Florida are facing challenges due to the discharges from Lake Okeechobee. These discharges have led to murky water that reduces visibility underwater, making it difficult for divers to do their work efficiently. As a result, businesses like Barracuda Dive Service, owned by Russell Singson, have experienced smaller paychecks and delays in completing boat cleanings.
In addition to the negative impact on business, the contaminated water also poses health risks for divers. Singson and his team have taken extra precautions with sanitation after diving to avoid potential infections from the polluted water.
At At the Helm Training, located along the St. Lucie River, there has been a 50% decrease in bookings compared to the previous year due to concerns about water cleanliness. Operations Manager Nancy Husk emphasizes that clients are avoiding water-related activities because of fears of poor water quality following a severe algae bloom in 2018.
Both Singson and Husk hope for changes in the Army Corps of Engineers’ approach to water releases from Lake Okeechobee. They anticipate a plan that will reduce discharges and improve water quality to help mitigate the negative impacts on businesses and communities in Stuart.
