NASA’s Mars Science Laboratory Team Discovers Ripples and Rocks in Rover’s Path for Memorial Day Weekend Exploration

Sols 1353-1354: Smooth Sailing Ahead – NASA Science

The team is excited about the news from Sol 1352 post-drive imaging, which shows sandy ripples ahead on the rover’s path. However, there are also rocky patches that will ensure smooth driving towards the southwest. Mastcam will capture stereo mosaics of the Murray-Stimson contact and a few areas to the west featuring nodular features before the drive. Afterward, ChemCam will analyze the chemistry of a chosen target using AEGIS software.

In preparation for Memorial Day weekend, two sols are being planned in advance. Data from Sol 1352 will be received on Saturday morning to aid in planning for the rest of the weekend. Navcam will be monitoring clouds during Sol 1353, while Mastcam will monitor dust levels in the atmosphere at different times during the sol. Additionally, ChemCam will conduct a calibration activity as part of its routine operations.

As MAHLI/MARDI uplink lead Ken Herkenhoff has an easy day with only usual planning for MARDI twilight image. It is worth noting that dates of planned rover activities mentioned in these reports may change due to factors related to Mars’ environment, communication relays, and rover status.

In conclusion, it’s good news for NASA’s Mars Science Laboratory team as they plan their next steps towards exploring Mars’ southwestern region. With sandy ripples and rocky patches ahead on their rover’s path, they can continue their mission without any major obstacles.
